There are a lot of different diseases that fish can get, many caused by stress or poor water quality. Here are just a few of the more common diseases that fish can get.
Ich- This is caused by a parasite. Symptoms include white spots on the fish that appear is if they have been sprinkled with salt.
Fungus- white tufts that look like cotton on the fish
Velvet disease- looks similar to ich, but the spots are smaller and they almost appear gold-ish.
Flukes- Caused by a parasite. Causes damage to the slime coat of fish leaving it open to infection.
Like I said, these are just some of the common diseases that fish can get.

If you buy healthy fish you shouldn't have too much trouble with disease. Disease is usually (not always) caused by bringing in fish that are already diseased, or bad water conditions. Most pet stores will test your water for little or no charge. Or you can buy test kits to test it at home. Not sure how long you have had your aquarium, but try getting a book about setting up a new aquarium. They are very helpful.

Ich, fungus, external bacterial infections, mouth rot, fin rot, lice, hook worm, gill worm, bubble eye, hole in the head, neon tetra disease and water mold. Those are the ones that most easily come to mind.
Other inflictions are physical damage (torn fins, missing scales), nitrite/nitrate spikes (red streaks in fins), lack of oxygen, terminal ingestion (choke to death on gravel), chlorine burns and constipation.
