My computer makes this crunching sound when it starts to load everything. I have a 2002 dell flat panel. Why do you think my computer is making these weird sounds?! And my computer works very well and doesnt have alot of files.

It could be that one of your cooling fans has become slightly loose.

Inside the PC box, there are usually about 3 cooling fans which keep the components cool.

Sometimes one of the fans will come slightly loose and will rattle about whilst it is spinning.

Its an easy job to replace it for someone who knows how, but you might want to take it to be repaired at a specialist.

Hey Dude,

Describe the Crunching sound.

PC's are in a constant state of dying. There are a few things that will die eventually.

Hard drives
Power supplies,
All fans.

You need to open the case and pinpoint the source of the sound. Crunching is never good.

BACK UP your system and files. 2002, the computer is coming end of life, hate to say it. I usually give current PC's a life of 5 years, on the long end.

Open your PC and see what is going on in there, Maybe it only needs a cleaning. DO NOT spin up your fans with air cans or compressed air. If you spin them, you will ruin the bearings and have to replace them quickly.

I actually found dead critters in many computers. Some have eaten wires and things. When your computer starts to smell, you have issues.

Putting oil on sealed fans is difficult. If you do it, know that you are only putting off the inevitable for a short period of time. Buy a new fan.

The only moving parts in the computer are the cooling fans and the hard drive.

Have someone who knows what they're doing help you open the computer and make sure there's nothing in the fans (a vacuum cleaner works well for this) - put a drop of oil on the fan shafts.

If the noise continues, listen to the hard drive as it boots up. If theres a loose arm or platter in the hard drive, you'll need to get it repaired.

Noisy drives are not always defective. Some are just inherently noisy.

Hard drives are usually nearly silent but some do make a muted clicking sound when they're being accessed - this is normal. On the other hand, if you start hearing noises only occasionally or noises that you've never heard before - like clicking, grinding or squealing - your hard drive may be failing.

The steps contained in the link will help you identify the issue.

Because you say this happens mostly at start up I would say it is the hard drive.

Different hard drives make different sounds at different levels.
The sound insulation offered by various cases is also a factor.

it could be dust clogging up your CPU heatsink/fan or it could be yor graphics card fan clogging up - or even dying motherboard chipset fans - just clean your entire system with a mini-vac or a can of airspray - and check for any wires or screws that may have strayed into one of your fans - it could be that
