...and how long was it before you had to get a proper tradesman in to fix up the botch job they made of it? You pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

Bedlam.I employed some Poles to do some carpentry and painting. They quoted me a fair price and seemed genuine. As soon as I'd paid them their first couple of days money, I never saw them again. Had to get a proper tradesmen in to finish the job, and at not much more than the Poles quoted. Then out of the blue one of the Poles had the cheek to come round and demand more money from me. He threatened me with violence, and as a result now walks with a limp.

A friend of mine asked me to quote to do up this flat he'd just bought. Money was tight, so he went with these eastern europeans his boss had used. my price was £15k ish, the price he went with was £6.5k. I was going to take 6 weeks. They started in November, I saw him over Christmas, he's paid out £20k so far and they're nowhere near finished yet...

Many people left own East European countries (were is big unempolyment) looking for a job in other countries. Those people educated at university, economists, sociologists, lawyers, doctors. There is some people without any education like plumbers, dwellers and people with middle education like nurses or technicians. Ones are experienced in own porfession and some not, some are good and some are bad. All of them desperatly are looking for ANY job.Good if a nurse find a job to take care of a child or eldery person. If a plumber get same job could be a problem unless he has some experience in it, has an own child or was taking care of his old grandfather or grandmother. Sometimes they still bring their relatives who are in the same situation. It is hard if you have to feed your family and no job for a several years. They 'll take any offered job.Unemployment money (little more then 200$ per month per family) practically is enough for 2 weeks of leaving without paying a rent. So Western employers are lucky if for a nursing job they'll get a nurse or for plumbing job a plumer.Sometimes pizza owner get a phisician or a nurse to make a pizza , plumbing owner get sociologist, electric buisness owner get a lawyer instead of electrician or baby sitter is a plumber or worse scenario- a thief. So you have all this profession and characters in one basket and it is you luck what you pick up..My advise is if you hire East Europeans ask first about their experience, somebody have to check often if the work is going with a plan and keep a beer after the day ends.

i worked on a site in Tilbury, large contract, some Polish group had secured some work to revamp kitchens and bathrooms inlcuding plumbing, electrics and decor. I was called in as an electrician, as another trademan had raised concern on 1 piece of work, of theirs.
On inspection we found that although everything worked, almost everything broke BS standards (british standards) and therefore failed all safety ascepts. As a result the kitchens and bathrooms were all checked I checked a further2 personally. They all needed remeeda,l if not full, correction.
When the Pol's turned up to be witness to the accusations, the only English speaking one just said 'ok', they got their tools and left.
My impression is they may have skills from their own countries but unless they had VALID UK certificates in their respective trades I would avoid them.

i went to fit a new shop front (window and door)the owner got some poles in to take out brick work so he could save money.when i got there the hole was already in the wall and the steel lintel was in place. unfortunately not in the right place though.by the time they finished they had to re brick up one side and they had one inch to about four inches to make good at the top of the window because they had not used a spirit level for the steel lintel. they had started the work at 4am and was finished for about 10am. so they work quick but then it took the rest of the day to rectify the problems. the owner will not be using the poles again.

I hired a polish electrician once. It was a fiasco. Kept going out to his truck to pound down beers. I had to hire some Salvadorians to come in and fix what he did.

methinks you could be a disgruntled tradesman who is being undercut by Eastern European tradesmen, so thought you'd send out some propaganda!
