The oldest writings we possess are from southern Mesopotamia (Greek for "Between the Waters" which is Southern Iraq which comes from the Arabic: "al-Iraq" which means "along the shores or length of the"{rivers} ) These writings are preserved in clay tablets. The book, which we call "The Epic of Gilgamesh" was one of these that could be translated, most we are still unable to translate. Historians credit southern Iraq with the invention of writing, however our style of writing comes from the Phoenicians.
The Phonetic Alphabet which the Greeks and Hebrews used and the Arabs later adopted came from the Phoenicians which lived in modern Lebanon. Phonetic is from Phoenician and Phonics come from phonetic. These Phoenicians colonized North Africa (Carthage) and the Roman's later conquer them in what they called the "Punic" Wars Punic was the Roman (Latin) for Phoenician.
