2. Oklahoma was still great
3. Mississippi was also great
Least friendly
1. Kentucky--west, central, east, the whole da*n state! Whenever I return to Penn. to visit relatives, I bypass KY!

BTW, I lived in NYC in the early 1990s for a college exchange program. The tourist-oriented places weren't so friendly. However, in the less "touristy" retail and dining establishments, as well as out on the sidewalk, the people aren't so bad. I enjoyed my six week stint there!

Have you ever been to Alabama? The people here are amazingly nice...I moved from Arkansas where everyone seemed stuffy to a place where everyone says 'yes maam, no maam' and men run to open doors for women, and strangers always wave on the street and say hello if within 3 feet...(locals that is)....as a matter of fact, thats how you can tell a local from a tourist is by their friendliness! Friendly? Must be a local! Even on the phone, you can HEAR them smiling!! Goodbyes are always"have a great day". I am in the deep south and here to testify that chivalry is not dead and southern hospitality is definitely alive and well! Have a great day, yes sir....

Friendly - Toronto, Osaka, Buffalo, Utila (Honduras)
Unfriendly - Belleville (Ontario, Canada)
I live in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, and they call it "The Friendly City". They forgot to mention that it IS friendly, warm and open to the people who were here for generations (oh, and of a particular race and only certain religions). Newcomers and even people who have been here for 20 years say differently. I've never lived anywhere unfriendlier, intolerant, closed-minded, cold, and racist in my entire life. Of course, that's not to say there aren't wonderful and friendly people who live here!
I've lived in Toronto, Canada, and Osaka, Japan for each over a decade, Buffalo, NY, and Utila, Honduras for months at a time only and would have to say all are more friendly places to live. I couldn't even rate them - they're all friendly.
A lot has to do with how outgoing and friendly the individual is, too, though. I'm really outgoing but sometimes that doesn't even help me here in Belleville - especially in my job as a public schol teacher (where my employers are extremely unfriendly and regrettably also racist towards me, in some cases).

Friendliest--NYC and Knoxville, TN. We go to NYC pretty often, and I'm originally from the Knoxville area.
Least Friendly---Connecticut. Too many loud people who yell over each other here. I live here now and wonder what's wrong with these people.
