traditional love poetry= courtly love, woman is idealized, and is pure and chaste, poets or knights would admire from afar, no sexual or physical contact. I would like someone else's opinion on whether Neruda sticks to such conventions in his poetry especially in poem 20 s he is classed as a contemporary poet.

Yes, this particular poem shows the traditional concept of unrequited love for a woman who is unattainable, who is identified with the sky and the stars as if to make her even more remote. The poet uses pathetical fallacy as he describes the wind singing mournfully along with himself while he recalls his lost love. Courtly love must be for an idealised subject who remains unattainable. Tender, melancholic, sensuous and passionate.... I can't get enough of Pablo Neruda!

I would definitely not put him in the traditional category simply because his poetry is so intimate. 20 happens to be my all time favorite poem and I think it is because it seems so realistic. So often people try to make love a black and white thing--he embraces the fact that it is full of emotions and cannot be boxed in. His focus isn't on the purity of the woman, but the purity of their love. His desire for her has overcome all logic and you can read that in his contradicting lines. You cannot get that emotional entangled by pursuing someone in a courtly fashion.

I would think not. I think he sees women as inherently beautiful because of their sensuality, sexuality, passion and experience. This I see as completely opposite of a love of someone who is pure (free of experience) and chaste (choosing to not indulge in experience).

Love his poems!
