I was taught if it is not making a normal sound, don't drive it unless you are positive you will not make the damage any worse.

No not an automobile engine mechanic. The vehicle needed to be towed to prevent further damages. The engine could have been rebuilt.
try to take pictures and try to get his certification pulled unless he pays or contact your attorney.
