My mother in law. She was great help with my wife. A big brother, he taught his little brothers just how tough one has to be to survive.
On a more serious note, baby monitors, a stack of baby bottles, teethers, and probably most importantly Pedialyte for rehydration when they are sick. (a dvd player in the van helps for baby sitting, I have five boys - 18, 16, 2, 1, and one in the womb. The two older ones were from a previous, but they live with me)

My God-send was a very old pediatrician that taught me with my 3rd baby to create a nice feeding and sleeping schedule. I was nursing my little one and every mother would sit around and talk about sleep deprivation, ear infections, crabby husbands, dirty laundry, and hungry kiddies. But no one had a solution, just "It will get better!" But it didn't with my first 2. So when I began using a nice gentle schedule with my 3 and 4th babies, and incidently 12 more newborns that I fostered, then I was finally able to sleep, feed my family well, get my home cleaned up, and have the most incrediable family life with a happy content baby. Everyone wanted to know how I could go out shopping, church, dinner, etc. and still have a content baby! It was easy and life normalized. My subsequent babies were easy to care for, no colic, ear infections, etc. Dr. Leila Denmark then told me to go out and help 1 more mother.....I hope I can. diannatriplett@yahoo.com

I truly consider a sling or baby carrier a godsend. When my older daughter was three months old, my husband and I took a short trip to a little resort town. We brought my daughter along and she slept, nursed and just observed everything from the sling. No stroller to lug into the tiny shops. My husband stuck a diaper and a ziplock with wipes in his pocket and we really enjoyed the trip. It soothed my daughter when she was fussy and allowed me to nurse in public. When she nursed, people thought she was sleeping. I used it until she was over two years old. It saved my arms from carrying her everywhere.
The sling was even better when daughter #2 came along because I could have my baby close to me while I tended to my toddler.

This sounds silly but for me it was the bulb syringe. I couldn't stand to hear her breathing so hard because of all the stuff in her nose. When your kids get older you teach them to blow their nose but when there are babies it just seems wrong to let them just kinda suffer with a stuffy nose. Many nights when she was an infant during the cold season clearing her nose would allow her to be able to breathe easier and fall alseep faster.

The little vibrating baby seats! My first son had colic and it was the only thing that calmed him. My second son just loves to sit in his, lol. And the Exosaucer things. SO much safer than a walker!

For me it was, and still is, the pack and play. I've had the same one since my son was born six years ago. I take it everywhere, and when we're home, the baby sleeps in it so I can roll over and nurse at night. It's great!

Bulb syringe and the travel mirror that you put up so you can see your baby in your rear-view mirror. I have to drive 15-20 minutes to the store, and being able to see my baby and make sure he is okay puts my mind at ease more than anything.

I agree with mom of 3. I absolutely loved the pack and play. We frequently travle out of state to visit relatives. Taking the pack and play along is so convienent.

Well one thing that I wish someone would have told me was to put shoes on my little one way before he started walking, my little boy is having the hard time learning to walk in shoes!
Very helpful items include:
Those cans of ready to feed formula
A SWING! - This has given me much needed rest at times....
A breast pump...
I could go on and on....but I wont...it's making me tired

One of those mesh bags with a handle for first solid foods. Dr. Brown bottles and grocery store brand diapers.
