Now that is an interesting question.

Back in the 1930's (and long before that) the corner store (which usually had a post office set off in one corner) sold cookies out of a large glass jar that had a very large screw-on lid. The lid was set on a surface that sloped at about 45 degrees. You can see this type of cookie jar in old western movies.

The cookies sold for a penny apiece but by the early 1970s, rising commodity prices for flour, sugar and shortening, etc., forced re-evaluation of product size, packaging style and price. Penny cookies and glass jars went out."

The best of all cookies sold that way were two that were almond flavored, they were about 4 inches across, and one had a hard pink glazing and the other a hard white glazing.

1) Oatmeal raisin/Teacake (although it says 'cake', it really is in the shape of a cookie)
2) Double chocolate chip
3) Lemon
4) Butter-Butter (melt in your mouth as soon as it touches your tongue)
