Americans call the sport soccer because, when Americans first started to play organized football (soccer), football (american football) was already gaining popularity across the nation, and therefore it would have been confusing to spectators and sports fans. Soccer comes from the phrase "association football" which was what the present English Premiership was called in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Other countries like England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Canada, Norway, Finland, Sweden, France, Germany, and Uruaguay call the sport football, while countries with a heavy Spanish influence like Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, Columbia, and, Argentina call the sport futbol. Hope it helps!

Where have you been? More and more countries call it soccer than ever , and the includes World Cup Soccer and not World Cup Football.
Football in the states has it's own identity and was not stolen.
Football was given its name due to that fact the game begins with a kick-off, hence football.
People play and obsess with soccer in other countries because that's the only sport they have an know. How much fun is that? Wouldn't like to have a variety of sports to watch and chose from?

Cuz Americans stole the name "football" to use it for some sport with big dudes! That's why they had to come up with another name. Oh and yeah American football isn't played mostly with feet, but sometimes they do kick it. I think they should rename American football tackleball.
