first of all that whole engine light blinking code reading is for a obd1 system witch has not been used since the early 90s
so that will not work your car has an obd2 system with out more info on what the car is doing the only thing i can tell you is to take it to a dealer and find out what code is set some things I have seen alot on the cavalier is the evap vent valve not working (not much you can do to test with out a gm scan tool) and the cooling fan fuse blowing (ya that will set a code too) check the fuse to see if its open if so the fan has packed it in

Go to your local dealer or shop and ask the foreman or shop manager to scan your PCM for the code(s). They will usually do this for free and give you advice on how to proceed. These codes are very good clues as to what the problem is with the car. If you would have wrote some other conditions as to what was going wrong with your car, I could have offered some suggestions. If your car is running fine and the SES light came on, the problem could be as simple as your gas cap is missing or not tightened properly.

nine times out of ten it will be your 0 2 censor but you can have a code reader done and it's cheaper the a dynastic test.
to find out code just turn key to on without starting it and count how many times the engine light blinks- the code will read itself 2 or 3 times then take that information to a GM dealership and they will tell you what it read-FREE and they will tell you what to do next!!! Good Luck!!!

Hook up a scanner and pull the codes. Then clear the code, drive the vehicle and see if the same code sets again.
Otherwise you have no idea where to start.

Take it to Autozone or O'reilly's. They have a machine you can hook it up to and it will tell what needs fixed.

Take it to Autozone and ask them to help you hook up their computer to your car, it's FREE.
