USA owes their independence to France. Without French help,
they were simply overmatched against the British. They would have to wait for the British to grant them independence years later.

Without the conflict between the English and French in Europe during the American Revolution, England would have easily squashed the American Revolution. Also, The French Navy sent some ships into the Colonies to provide some limited assistance to the Americans, which was also helpful.
What happened to the French between then and now?

The French sent financial aid and supplied troops , training , advisers ,ammunition and supplies to support the revolution.
Not that they were into the American cause but to cheese off England and divide their military resources . Hoping this will weaken England's military and improve France's military campaign against them.
They knew the revolutionary forces alone would be defeated without support and wanted them to hold out as long as possible to have an effect on Britain's forces in Europe. Which it did as the British forces were getting the upper hand they were having troops recalled to support efforts in Europe which eventually led to Cornwallis's surrender as he was losing support.

You would probably be a member of the Commonwealth of Nations because you could never have defeated the Brits without French help.
