If you want to upgrade your created character, go through season mode and beat it to get a lot of attribute points. Then from the main menu, go to create. Go all the way to the bottom where it says customize attributes. Then choose your created superstar.
If you want to upgrade a real superstar's attributes, then play the season mode with a real superstar to earn a lot of attribute points, then go to general manager mode and click on customize attributes.
I've done both and beat the whole game.

play the season mode with your created character. If you mean for team attributes, then go through season mode with the other members of your team as well. Then, place the built up points on the desired attribute. This may or may not work for building up the true characters of the game. Good luck!
