looking like you made an effort with your appearance is good...also, be that guy that steps in and does stuff without being asked, and ask a lot of questions....and be the guy that does stuff that no one else wants to do.

The best thing you can do is be on time if not a little early. What the interviewer sees is also very important....look good for the job you are applieing for. Impress on them that you can and will be an assett for them and can work indepent if need to or work as a team player. Most of all be yourself....they can see through B.S. How you look, shallow yes, but they are gonna see you before they are going to meet you and that is when the first impression will be formed.

It is all three. Appearance will be the first impression.
Be timely
Be Clean and neat
A firm hand-shake tells a lot about who you are.
Be confident. ( No boasting, just honest and sincere with qualifications)
Be gracious. (Thank him or her for their time).

Yes it is how you look at first. If you're going for a professional job you can't have that mohawk and cover any tattoos. It's the whole package--looks, knowledge and experience.

To me, it's how you look... if you show up for a job, wearing grunge and a baseball cap worn off your ear or backwards... chewing gum and needing a shoe shine... I wouldn't hire you if you were the ONLY person applying for the job.
