The caption in the side bar states that IE7 does not support the side bar and I should update the software. What therefore is the point in downloading IE7 if I lose my details

You only need to do a search on here to see how many people are having problems with IE7. The best thing to do is download Mozilla Firefox available from http://www.mozilla.com/ Its faster, more user friendly, easily customisable to suit your needs and no problems.

IE7 is full of faults - it has been rushed out without being fully tested.
I downloaded it and had all sorts of problems.
I had to get an engineer to reset most of the drivers, remove 'false' IP address, etc.
He advised me to wait for several months until IE7 had been fixed.

Uninstall it if you can, then do a restore.

Sounds like the sidebar you use is not part of IE6 but a third party application. If you know where the sidebar comes from try to find out if there is an update
