Looks like whoever sold the PC to you has loaded an illegal copy of Windows, if you want to keep updated with all security patches then you have little option but to purchase a full and legal copy, may as well go for Vista, due out at end of the month

There were problems with the Windows validation tool a few months ago.It was telling me a copy of Windows wasn't genuine when it was.Now it seems quite happy with it so it's clearly not infallible.I take it it's just not letting you run an update. If your on Sp2 and your system is working OK I wouldn't be worrying too much.If you bought from a dealer or shop you may be able to get another copy loaded FOC.

Yu have an illegal copy, you should also get a link to microsoft site that will allow you to get a roper activation key. Alternatively buy a copy of XP, I'm guessing that after next month when vista is out the cost of XP will probably drop

the only way to rectify this is to buy a genuine windows license.

It is mega expensive and not worth the hassle.
Simply click 'resolve later' when starting up.
sometimes even when you buy the license, the windows site recoginses it but when you move it becomes invalid.

The reason it shows as not valid isn't that it is a 'copy' but the license is being used elsewhere as well, (normally by the person who installed it)

Or you could move to Linux, its free - even if it aint much good yet

Don't panic, it may just be that the Validation Tool has failed. It does that a lot!
Go to the Microsoft site and see if you can get it to download; and look at the case and see if the serial number sticker is on it anywhere.

Easy.Go to C:\windows\system32\
Find the files named WGATray and WGA something.
Either try renaming them and then deleting or boot up in safe mode and change the extension of this files and then delete them.Problem solved. You must seriously consider buying genuine software and support those hard-working guys.
