I need a good craft idea for 6 and 7 year old Cub Scouts. Each parent has to come up with something and I don't have anything. Thanks!

Get some Tulip paints (or other fabric paint), and one white Tee shirt for each child. The paints can be shared. Have them decorate their own Tee-shirts. To do this, you will need to prep the shirts by washing all the sizing out of them (not needed if there is none- as in many foreign-made shirts) in cold water. Have the kids lay each shirt flat, and put a piece of newsprint inbetween the front and back of the shirt. The front should bace the top, then the newsprint below that, and then the back, like a sandwich, laying on the table or ground. Have each cubscout wear a smock. (Parents can donate old adult shirts for the day, for that purpose!) Then, pass around the paints, but instruct the children to use them sparingly. They are tubes, so the kids can just squirt them slowly. You can add beads and spangles, if you just place them over the tulip paints when the paint is still wet, because it will act like glue. The finished product will be washable. Even a kid who cannot write yet will be able to draw a circle or square, some lines, or special sign, and put his favorite colors of spangles on them. If the troupe has a special sign, perhaps someone can do that.

As long as things are washed immediately, the paints will come out of fabrics. Still, with a large group, a couple of drop clothes might be advisable, or even a tarp, to cover the ground. I have done this activity successfully before, and everyone had a great time.

NOTE: If you don't have time for shirts, try bandannas, cloth flags, or baseball-style hats: They work well, too.

Hope your den has lots of fun!

thumbprint pictures are a blast. They have books with ideas to make them look like different things. Then you could explain the idea behind "they are THUMBODY". It's a great story and would be perfect for scouts. I just found this site: www.dltk-kids.com/ a few minutes ago. I love it. I can't wait to use it with my grandkids. they are 4,6,9. They'll love it. check it out. tons of things to do. You can also go to the craft stores or even party city. They have small craft kits where they put things together. Lots of choices there. Not sure if all scouts do this but if they all do the Pine Car Derby thing then maybe you can make a display block or platform type thing for their cars for after the race. They can display them. Maybe hook a picture frame out of craft foam to it so they can have pics taken of them and their car and put it in the frame. Have fun.

These kids may seem young for this at first, but heavy adult supervision makes this perfectly safe. Building Estes model rockets can be educational and fun. You can explain why rockets like the ones at nasa fly. Tell them some about the apollo space missions, and the triumphs and failures and whatever! Estes makes a variaty of scale models of actual NASA rockets that actually fly(the flying of the rockets is where adults need to handle the operation while the kids watch ).

Do a web search on "Cub scout crafts". You'll be surprised how many sites come up. I'm sure you'll find something to interest you.

Take a metal coffee can, spay paint it a solid light color, put water in it and freeze it. After it's frozen use hammer a nail in to the can to make patterns. Let the ice thaw in a sink and empty the can. put in some sand and a votive candle it makes a nice gift. keep the lid to keep the dust off the candle. Leave uncovered when candle is lit.
