I don't know that we can necessarily blame the lack of spelling abilities within an individual on the "schools". Learning to spell properly is definitely an 'INDIVIDUAL COMMITMENT." With the influx of text messaging, our kids have an even greater opportunity to short cut in the areas of spelling. The use of symbols gives them the idea that it is "okay" to use. When I was in school, spelling was a necessary 'evil' in all classes - from elementary to high school. I loved to spell. When I went to college - I discovered that there are people in the world who have the ability to 'see' a word and realize the inconsistencies and reversed letters and can dictate a word incorrectly spelled. Somehow, I was one of those persons. As a teacher, I have found that students are not as accurate for several reasons - 1) they don't study to spell correctly - meaning you have to understand the words, meanings and orgins if you want to become a better speller 2) there is little or NO BACKUP at home! My mom used to sit down WITH US and fire words at us to spell. She was an intricate part of my learning. In turn, I did the same for my own child, niece, nephew and later - students. I have spelling every week. I had to teach them 'HOW TO STUDY' spelling words. It is almost as if we are moving backwards. I have students in my school 5-8th grade who 'act' as though they have never been taught the protocol for even taking a test. Imagine giving a spelling test and having to tell your students before you start - 1) you cannot ask me how to spell the word 2) you cannot talk during the test. The issue of schools these days - go way beyond spelling. You have many motivated teachers (I firmly believe that no person in their right mind would choose this career unless they are called to the position and really love what they do- the abuse and lack of pay is phenominal) There is so much bureaucracy involved that teachers no longer teach - we complete armloads of paperwork to prove we are implementing what the government says we are to - but the one-on-one teaching and developing students - be damned. It is a struggle everyday. I still believe that teaching is a VILLAGE JOB. The teachers, parents, community are all equally important to the success of each child. Be thankful that you received the kind of education you did - and you learned to spell. Believe me - I teach all the rules and ideas of being a good speller as well as language, grammar, mechanics, reading and all that goes along with that - but if the child does not study, does not apply himself, he is not going to be successful. Kids today, for the most part, play act school. I see it everyday and it is hard work when we have to combat with parents, school boards, children who want to fight teachers, who have no training from home, parents who would rather see you 'fired' than try to work with you and their child....I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture.

When my little sister was in elementary school, at that time, they thought spelling wasn't important. They were taught to sound it out and spell it like it sounds. She's 15 now - to give you an idea of a timeline. She has really bad spelling now because of that and I think it's terrible. It never made sense that they weren't counted off for wrong spelling, what happens when she gets older and is looking for a job? She won't get hired if her app and resume have lots of misspellings, it will look bad.

Believe it or not, most schools don't focus on spelling anymore! I think it's horrible, but then again, I never got so much as an A- on a spelling test. I suspect people who use proper spelling are fast becoming a dying breed...

It is shameful. Bad grammar is a problem too. We have become a society that glorifies stupidity.
Spelling and grammar are a code more than anything. You gauge how serious someone is, or how likely they are to understand you by analyzing their spelling and grammar. They're perfect tools when you're perusing through Yahoo! Answers.
PS - How ironic! The Yahoo! spell checker thinks that 'gauge' is misspelled.

Yes, the schools no longer teach spelling. It doesn't fit in with their "no child left behind" nonsense. We need to get back to basics. We have a whole generation of near illiterates.

Using shortcuts in writing is leading to this ('ll b bck) style...
By the way, I noticed that when I type, I can spell much better than when I write something using a pen! It's so ashaming!

Yes. Some people have really poor punctuation and capitalization habits, as well.
It's shameful!

It is irritating. The sad part is that there is even a spell checker, right there.
