In example, the americans called the germans "krauts" during WWII, the english and british called the americans "yankees" during the civil war. i'd like to know what all of the names people have come up with, during what time period, or historical event, and why.

I can clarify the two you gave as examples. Kraut is cabbage, more specifically fermented cabbage. Calling someone a cabbage-head (krautkopf) is an old insult. I don't know where the word yankee originated, but what it means varies depending on where you are. If you're a foreigner, it means an American. If you're an American, it means someone from the northern states. Tht's where the civil war comes in, because the term yankee goes way farther back. If you're a northerner, it's someone from the New England states. If you're in the New England states, it's someone from Vermont. If you're in Vermont, it's somebody who still uses an outhouse.

"Copperheads" - were Northern Democrats who were against the Lincoln administration during the Civil War. This in turn could mean that Lincoln would not be elected and therefore it would have given the South a more than likely chance of winning he Civil War.

"Carpetbaggers" were Northern citizens who went down to the South after the Civil War to help with the reconstruction of the South. Some of them, however, were corrupt and stole things from the southern citizens. The things they stole they put in carpetbags, which were the suitcases of the time
