BANGKOK, Thailand -- Billionaire George Soros has cancelled a planned visit to Thailand amid threats from protesters who blame him for the Asian economic crisis.
The protesters threatened to pelt Soros, a financier who operates out of New York, with excrement and rotten eggs.
They accuse him of speculating on the That baht in early 1998, causing it to be devalued and setting off a wave of panic across the region that caused shares indexes to crash, currencies to plunge and commodity prices to hit long-term lows.
The ensuing financial crisis eventually spread to emerging markets in Russia and Latin America.
An official at the Foreign Correspondent Club of Thailand (FCCT), which had organized a speech by Soros at Bangkok's famous Oriental Hotel on Thursday, said Soros had pulled out of the event
