"I" can observe and direct my thoughts, feelings and actions. I have a body but I am not my body. I have a mind but I am not my mind. I have feelings but I am not my emotions. I have an ego but I am not my ego: Its a matter of personal versus transpersonal awareness.

Just think what are the things that are in your control, even bodily? Breathing? heartbeat? Your hunger , thirst, waste disposal/ Nothing, just nothing. We seem to think that we have control over these . May be for a little while. That is all.

Then where is the question of controlling the mind? In fact the mind is totally outside your body. when you cannot control what you see and feel where is the question of mind control? The only thing we can do is to allow the thoughts to come and go, unhindered . The moment you grapple with the thought you want to control it. Why, in the first place , you catch hold of the thought?

There is another important thing called Intellect which can guide the mind. There is meditation technique to be at peace with the mind and the thoughts.

The ONLY thing that is behind the mind is called Awareness or Consciousness which lights up everything. Even that does not control. It is just a witness to the things .

Our mind is a battlefield, between our intellect and our more natural more animalistic instincts. At times, most of the time for well balanced people, the two sides are in harmony. There is a conflict only when the more natural side is trying to control our actions and what we do. Our duty on earth is not to supress our animalistic side but to keep a balance a peace where our urges dont control us.
