Cyrus the Great was the Persian king who defeated the Babylonians in 539 BC and eventually let the Jews go back home from their exile to Jerusalem. His kingship was one of great tolerance for all religions as he told the Jews to rebuild their temple and may God be with them. It is considered to be a progressive way to rule because in Middle eastern politics religion played a vital role and your enemies might or would have equated the rebuilding of the temple as an act of treason.

Cyrus the Great was a Persian general who conquered Asia minor. After his death I think one of his descendants (a king of Persia in any case) attacked Greece building upon Cyrus's conquests.
