The tax burden took off after the first World War when Britain struggled to pay off her War Loans to the USA. Incidentally this loan is not repaid yet. Then Britain went to the defence of Poland the day Germany invaded and off we went again on a war we could ill afford. This time the USA did not charge us for war materials but War Loans were made for rebuilding after the blitz.
The final payment was made December 2006 and now we are financing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan plus taking on all the immigrants in Europe who want the benefit of a welfare system. All this has to be paid for by the declining number of tax-payers.

because it is Labour! A cgovernment committed to socialism and an equal society, by penalising those who actually work and produce for the country, and rewarding those who do nothing and take.
If we stopped the tide of immigration in and only accepted people who had skills that could benefit our country; if we stopped handouts and benefits to single mothers who make a CHOICE not to use contraception and have a baby (they all do, please don't anyone tell me they got pregnant "on accident", it was just laziness!); if we used common sense in public spending, then we would have realistic taxes and an efficient country.
All the time Labour is in power, we will have the highest taxes in Europe as we do now. Vote 'em out!

Because we elected a Government who believes the answer to anything is either more money or more laws ...

Also, anyone with any money either finds a way to avoid Tax or leaves ... as a result, everyone who is left has to pay more...

NB> I believe we just finished paying off our war loan at end of last year.

Note also we NEED highly motivated highly skilled immigrants who are willing to do some honest work - unlike our own kids who can't even be bothered to do the smallest bit of research for their homework (have you SEEN the 'Questions' posted here ???)

Well every time I see my payslip I think money grubbing thieving ******.

If it can be taxed it will be taxed, now they also have the excuse of "green taxes". Need to pay for more nuclear subs somehow.

But bear in mind you get free medical care that other countries don't get so thats one bonus even if the NHS has been run into the ground

Because the government is incredibly, criminally wasteful and large companies who have contracts with the government routinely screw them (us) hard. £1 billion for the dome? £800 million for wembley? I'm scared how much the Olympics are going to cost but i guarantee you it will be at least twice the 'estimated' cost. If i got my budget at work so wrong i'd be on the street but it's accepted, normal and routine in the houses of parliament. To the entry which said the NHS is free, where does my national insurance go then? into landfill?
Grrrrrrrrr.

Because New Labour wishes to punish those who work by subsidizing the Johnny Foreigner parasites who don't.
It is an imposition of a Marxist Socialist ideology of the privileged must pay for their status as such.

Because of the NHS fat-cat managers
Because of the number of unemployed claiming benefits
Because of the immigrants claiming housing and benefits Inc'l health care
Because of the number of parents claiming child benefit
Because of the cost of policing our country
Because of the rules being imposed by Europe and the cost of imposing them
Because of the high paid Government ministers, all their hangers on's and the fringe benefits they claim for
Because of the cost of Education to cover all religions
Because we pay it without argument

Income tax is low if you're poor, but VAT is on all kinds of things now. It was the Tories that started the poor tax.
The NHS, pensions, dole, housing benefit, schools, police, fire, ambulance, roads and so on have to be paid for.
