Shy" is more someone who has a certain amount of discomfort in some social situations but who may usually find ways of dealing with it.
"Painfully shy" is someone for whom the shyness is more crippling and more something that intereferes with life rather than just being a little challenge in it.

They aren't exactly synonyms, but they're two different degrees of the same feeling. Shyness is being quiet and nervous about speaking to people while being painfully shy is really extreme. You can't talk to anyone or go visit people.

The difference is how much you beat yourself up over indecision about interacting with someone. If you sit in the corner and wait for someone to talk to you, you're shy. If you desperately want to talk to someone, but just can't because you're too nervous, that can be painfully shy.

i guess the degree depends on perspective. you could identify a person as shy for being so reserved and not being that active in social interaction. i guess you could call it painfully shy if the person experiences hurt in the sense that s/he regrets being shy so much because of missing out on something. maybe it's also called painfully shy if the person being faced by the someone who is "painfully shy" is rather affected/hurt that the particular person is shy being around him/her.

No they are total different things!! Shy is when you u sometimes don't want to talk or do things as much as non shy people do!! Painfully shy is when you just are totally absolutely shy and then you know that that peson won't want to do things as much as the shy person would! They are differnt words!!

Here's my definition -
Shy is when you don't like to make the first move but if someone asks you something, you will eventually open up...even if it's not a lot.
Painfully shy is when you still don't like to make the first move and for you to open up about ANYTHING is like pulling teeth.
