Why do highly educated Indians who R otherwise liberal in their belifefs want to marry within their caste?

I think it is because of their religious beliefs. It is a part of who they are culturally and spiritually.

In india, castism is since so many centuries.
Every cast is having its lifestyle. Some eat non-vage, which is totaly prohibited by other casts. Some casts use their right hand for eating, other casts may use both hands while eating.
For an arranged mariage, the boy or girls' family mamers look for this only. If a Girl is pure vage, and if she marries with a non-vage family, its difficult for the Girl to adjust . If she adjusts then its OK. If not, then , daily issues may arise.
But, if it is a love marriage, boy and girl are known to each other, they can sacrifice their likings depending on partner.

it is tradition and culture and although it was made illegal it is very much part of the culture .. i believe it prevents doctors from marrying a lower class etc and as we are all aware family honour is a huge thing in that culture

indians are deeply rooted in their traditions and even follow them when living in other countries...besides they have huge pressure to be socially acceptable and people have a biased view on intercaste marriages...though the situation is slowly changing.

South INDIAN's specailly do like this to preserve thier their culture and community.If they allow intercaste marraiges their customs and tradtions may be lost ...

It's been ingrained in them. The caste system is evil and should be abolished.
