Fish are social creatures, some even think they school for contact reasons as well as the protection in groups thing. As far as your Betta being a friendly soul, I think it is entirely possible that he has recognized you as a caretaker and has become more of a pet than just a fish in a bowl. I have had Bettas for years and they all have different personalities. I think they posses some level of intelligence and learning capacity. I don't think it's wierd I think its cool, maybe you should try some training/interactive techniques with your fish and see what happens. Good luck have fun!

Irrespective of whether or not he lets you, I would recommend doing so. Touching a fish and tapping the glass can cause undue stress and could potentially be fatal.

Bettas are very intelligent fish. Air breathers usually are. They each have their own personalities. They will recognize you when you approach them and respond to you and the attention you give them. My daughter has one that won't eat for anyone but her. I believe this is very normal for bettas. We call them puppies in a bowl. Have fun with your betta, it sounds like you've really bonded with him.

Actually the oil and bacteira from your hands can kill him. Please don't "pet" your fish.
