I have a Ford 98 Explorer it has stopped working and my snap on scanner Mt2500 is telling me that code 1260 'Theft detected, disabled engine' is showing on the scanner. I have run this test through the Vin no. application on the scanner, I have tried to clear the code but no prevail.

I am getting spark and i have hooked the fuel pump up hot so the throttle body is getting fuel but it still won't start.

I also tried disconnecting the batter for 24 hours with hopes that the code went away this did no work either.

I have the original Key in the ignition and the Theft light flashes quickly as if it was a bad key or trying to be stolen. The Key is orginial from Ford and only one i Have. I was also wondering if anyon knows if these keys go bad. Or if anyone knows the proper name for the ring inside the steering column of key insertion that sends the signal to the PCM.

Any suggestions.

Well, the code P1260 indicates that the pcm does not recognize the key. Either the key has failed(it has a small transmitter inside it, and they do fail sometimes) or the transciever(sensor ring is bad). the first thing that I would look for is some kind of aftermarket remote starter junk under the dash and remove it if it is there, the next thing to do is remove the steering wheel covers and make sure the ring around where the ignition cylinder goes thru is plugged in and looks ok, other than that, you are probably looking to tow it to a dealer for repairs.
Hope it helps....

ok enable's set the files right now. P1260 robbery detected signifies that the PATS device has seen a key turn the ignition to the on position yet did not receive a demonstration from the most, the module, or a nasty PCM in reality. Rakel is ideal.. see if the robbery mild is blinking quick once you attempt to commence it. even if it truly is, the PATS device isn't receiving the most code. in reality interior the device, there's a small ring around the most cylinder, it transmits a pulse to the most which responds again and the ring pronounces it over wires to the PATS module that in turn comments to the PCM. without second key you're type of screwed at the same time as it contains diagnosis. frequently when I see a p1260 with a frequently happening programmed key (to the motor vehicle), frequently that is both the most went undesirable (the chip breaking internally) or the ring (called a transceiver) breaking the coils interior and by no skill being waiting to document to the module. except bringing it to the Ford broking for appropriate diag, you are able to try a clean ring... in reality pull covers off the steerage column, undo screw and connector and get rid of.. opposite to change. because after that, you're type of stuck to the Ford broking to work out what's reporting to what... (and a sensible aspect is to have many keys for the motor vehicle.. a minimum of three that way you do not ought to pay the broking to software a key in case you free one) BTW Lexusry is incorrect on cycling interior the door. i have heard it truly works with some imports, notwithstanding the ring is the in effortless words aspect that reads the most on the Ford... the door cylinder is the same one in reality used for years (no electrics hooked to the most cylinder I recommend)

Do you have a spare key for this vehicle? The keys are embeded with a micro chip which does sometimes fails. If the second key also fails you have a problem with the PAT's (passive anti theft)system and willl need to replace the GEM (generic electronics module) module and have it flash programmed with all of your keys. This cannot be done with generic scanners.
