I know Limewire was written in Java, but are there any other popular programs written in this language. I am thinking about learning this language and I want to see what all can be done with it.

Java is rarely used "client side" for programs like Limewire. A lot of major retail websites are written in Java, though, or at least parts of their systems. FTD.com, for example, uses Java for much of their order processing, reporting, and customer service systems. The web site was based on something different when I worked there, but I think they may have even moved that over to a Java platform by now.

Absolutely!! Most of Yahoo's stuff is in Java...especially Yahoo! Games. Java and .NET are the two most prevalent languages, trust me, if you learn Java you will get to put it into use. Plus, it's pretty sweet all of the GUI stuff you can do.
