Not necessarily, but it probably means your cervix has began to ripen.
Ripening includes softening first, then effacement (thinning) and a little dilation.
The mucous plug can come out all at once, or a little at a time over a period of several days. It can happen anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks before labor (sometimes even longer).

When you lose the mucus plug, it means that you are fully effaced. You could have started dialating, but effacement, the amount of mucus between the outside world and the bag of waters is gone. Labor could start anywhere from one hour to two weeks depending which number of child this is for you.

Yes it usually does...though you may only be 1-2 cm dialated and stay stuck for weeks at that stage. I lost my plug weeks before I acutally went into labor.

Yes it does!!! The mucus plug is lodged in there tightly until your cervix starts to open enough to allow it to dislodge. This is the only way for it to get out. Good luck you're almost there!!!

i'm currently 40+ weeks pregnant. a couple of weeks ago i thought i lost my mucous plug. well i'm pretty sure i did. i called my dr. and she told me that its normal and its just your body way of getting ready. she said as your cervix rippens and dilates your mucous plug will come out. however, last night i lost some more stuff that looked just like what i thought was the plug i lost a few weeks ago so now i'm really confused.
