How old is your PC and are you using Norton Anti-virus software? My PC is a few years old and I used Norton. About a week ago (after complaining about the speed again) I was told that Norton can reduce the speed of an older PC considerably. A friend recommended free virus software (AVG) and I took the plunge. I uninsulated Norton and installed AVG. The difference is remarkable. With Norton, my PC took about 5 - 8 minutes to start up. Now it does it in 1 - 2 minutes.

You may also want to look at something like Registry Booster (it will perform a free scan, but won't fix any errors without a purchase) or Registry Clean Expert.

It is sometimes hard to determine the identity of a startup program. However, there are some tools which can help. You can use CastleCop's Startup Program Index. It has over 13,000 startup programs. Enter the name of the startup program, which appears in the msconfig , and it will give you a description of the startup program - it will even tell you if it is vital, non vital and/or a malicious program. Another good resource is Bleeping Computer's Startup Program list which boasts over 16,000 startup programs.

For unknown services, try Process Library (http://www.processlibrary.com/). It has a large list of Windows services. The site even provides a free download which scans your computer for all active services and displays them along with a fairly complete description. You can find it at http://www.processlibrary.com/processscan/

You kinda have to know what you are doing. Generally speaking anything that you see that has a filepath with System32 in it. DO NOT TOUCH. Other things you should look at the filepath, and note where they are located...if you haven't used this stuff in forever, uncheck it. But as you uncheck be prepared for funky stuff to happen, and you might have to recheck some things.

Don't use msconfig; use Winpatrol. Its very easy and you can see exactly what you're doing.
Also, uninstall any software you no longer use and delete old files, or move them to external storage. Then run Ccleaner. Use the ISsues tool and the Cleaner.
Then defragment your hard drive from Start - programs - accessories - system tools - disc defragmenter.

usually u do not uncheck anything from the "services" as it might cause your system to become unstable. instead, u can try to uncheck some of the "startup" program(s) that u don't need or use. winpatrol might be useful for you.
