If you water breaks before the first contraction they will usually start in the next 12 hours from it happening. If contractions don't seem to be starting in that time frame you should go on to the hospital so they can monitor you. If you water is broke for over a day or so without labor starting it increases the risk of infection so usually the OB will go ahead and induce labor.
Also - your water does not need to break first for labor to start. My water never broke until I was about past 5 cm dilate and already at the hospital in active labor.

Some women are already in labor when their water breaks. Other women notice labor right away, and for some it could be hours or even days after their water breaks that labor can begin. For most doctors, though, once labor breaks they will put a 24 hour time limit on moms because there's an increased risk of infection. Mostly, though, that comes from frequent examinations. Limit your exams while in labor if your water breaks to reduce this risk.

Labor is different for everyone, but generally once water breaks contractions should follow shortly.......... For some water doesn't break it has to be done by Dr.
You will know when you're in labor and don't be afraid it is not as bad as everyone says.... Just concentrate on the outcome and the beautiful baby you will have

For none of my pregnancies (four) the water never broke. The doctor had to break it himself, but all the time I was already dialating. The contractions can start right away, or start in a few hours. Either way, if your water breaks, you need to go to the hospital right away.

It is different for every woman, and each pregnancy.
My 1st: went into labour at 12:31pm, waters broke at 1.44pm, gave birth spontaneously at 3.16pm the same day.
My 2nd: went into labour at 4.32am, waters broke at 4.06am the next morning, gave birth after 3 hour induction at 12.21pm that afternoon.
My 3rd: Induced 2 weeks early due to medical condition, waters broken at 8.30am, induced at 9.40am, contractions started at 9.45am, gave birth at 11.36am the same morning.
So just because your waters have broken, doesn't mean that you'll start having contractions straight away. But if your waters have broken (and you're positive it was your waters, not urine) then call your hospital, and advise them, so they can tell you what the next steps should be. It is important for the hospital to be able to monitor you once your waters have broken, as it's possible to get an infection if left for too long, which can easily cross over to the unborn child.
Hope this has helped.

With both of mine, the contractions started first. But your water can break before contractions. If your water breaks, you need to head on to the hospital. If your contractions don't start soon, they can induce.

in child birthing class they taught us that it can happen either way. some people have contractions first then right before delivery the water breaks and some peoples water breaks then they start having contractions either right away or as labor progresses.

It is not a definite indication that labour is starting or that your contractions will only start after your water has broken. Please remember that not all womans' water breaks - sometimes the Doctor does that. From personal experience (water never broke - it was done by the Doctor) I can tell you that, after your water breaks, contractions are definitely stronger & intenser.
