Bleeding after a vaginal delivery can last for several weeks... and yes it can be very heavy and have clots.

Bleeding after a c-section is usually not nearly as bad because they clean a lot of it out when they are removing the placenta and all of that.

It is quite heavy the first week or so after delivery and then is really tapers off to being more like a light period...but if you strain yourself you may bring heavy bleeding back (becuase the site of the placenta is healing and you can cause the "scab" to break and bleeding to start again) Around 6 weeks is the normal range until it quits entirely.

Bleeding is very heavy at first, then slowly tapers off as you heal. Your uterus has to heal from where the placenta came off....a fairly large area. With my first child it lasted just 10 days (I was LUCKY!!!), but with subsequent births lasted from 2-4 weeks. When it starts to slow down, if it becomes very heavy flow again or changes back to bright red, you will want to contact your doctor...this could mean you are trying to od too much and not resting enough to allow your body to heal, or could be a sign of infection...Good luck!

It can be different for each mother.

The first 12 hours are meant to be the heaviest, and then begins to slow down. If there are very very large clots, it's advisable to show your midwife/nurse, as this could be a sign of an infection or that there was a failure to pass all of your placenta.

The blood is usually bright red in colour for the first couple of days, then changes to a pinky/brown colour which can continue for up to four to six weeks after the birth.

Hope this has helped:

Wishing you all the best.

i only bled heavy the first day or two. then it starts to taper off from moderate to light bleeding. it can last from 2-6+ weeks, but its not red blood the whole time. just remember--dont wear a tampon afterward, use pads.

I bled heavy for the first few days but after that it slowed and it lasted about 2-3 weeks....Try not to do to much at first, you need time to heal...
