I don't think Hitler's offer was taken very seriously at all by Churchill. Hitler, being a madman, probably took it very seriously indeed and thought the British would cave in as quickly as France.

Not very...neither a surrender nor Hitler's offer of an armistice (nor Hess' cuckooed plot to negotiate a settlement) was seriously considered by the British government. They were treated in the same vain as Al Quada's current demand that Great Britain surrender.

Churchill wasn't going to let Lord Halifax or anyone else talk up the idea, although it did have some Cabinet support as Britain's position was so dire.
The Germans would have accepted, as Hitler had been advancing the idea of war for the gaining of territory in the east since the 1920s so that was where their army needed to be concentrated. In the end, they just attacked the Soviet Union anyway.

Hitler wanted to attack Russia to stop the spread of Communism and he thought that Britain, seeing how well he had done in Europe, would see the sense of going in with him, to that end.
How wrong he was......
He didnt invade us because his Forces were not prepared. Apart from a few Barges that were being loaded up in France and Holland to make it look like an Invasion was imminent they were ill prepared.
Actually, if they had tried to invade it would probably have been the end of the War, as the Royal Navy would, with the Royal Airforce, have blown them out of the water!

Lord Halifax would have fallen for it and indeed put it forward however there was one great man in this country who when it was put to him told Hitler to shove it but at the time it was not generally known that primarily that was the reason for Hess to do what he did however history records the outcome! and as for facing tyranny you wouldn't have been alive to experience it

Churchill had no intention of surrendering, no matter the cost or the consequences. However, the offer was probably genuine, at least in the short term.

Since Churchill at least knew you couldn't trust Hitler as far as you could throw him, I doubt either side was taken in.
