I have downloaded a music file but it is in the form of .rar - my windows media player will not open it. Is there any ways that I can convert this into a mp3 file? Programs to download etc.? thanks

.rar is like .zip except a rar file is compressed differently, using a superior algarythm. Use WinRAR to open it first (works similar to WinZip) and export it to your desktop. You should then be able to play the file with WMP so long as the Codec (coder/decoder) that was used to make the video or music file in the first place is installed on your computer. Common ones are DivX, Xvid, WMA,WMV,OGG, AAC and Mp3.

the file was compressed using winrar

use winrar to un-rar it

PS. Depending on what you downloaded you may or may not have what you think you have. Many times full albums are zipped into several small sized rar files. So you might only have one of the pieces of the larger puzzle.

rar is an archive file simiar to zip. Windows doesn't recognise it as standard. A few programs to extract it would be

Use winrar to unpack it, then it will probably be usable in windows media player. If this helps you try my site you may like it.

you need to decompress it with a bit of software called winrar
