They mainly derived from Saxon words rather than Norman for one. Most cusswords were short and expletive, probably a characteristic of Saxon language at the time. We've just inherited it.
We could argue that a single syllable is simpler, quicker and easier on the brain, especially in the heat of the moment.

The answer is blatantly obvious, because people who swear haven't got a large enough vocabulary, and cannot think of anything other than a swear word to say.

Because most people that use them are unable to pronounce anything bigger.
Anyone who constantly uses cuss words usually doesn't have a vocabulary sufficient to adequately express themselves. They think that swearing makes their point.
