All the previous answers are great, but they are exactly what you would find in a history textbook. That is not all an American is about! A good American is someone who takes advantage of all this country has to offer. They make use of their liberties, and work to improve society. They question the actions of the political system, not out of spite, but out of concern for their well being, as well as their fellow Americans. They take action when they disagree with something, but not in a radical form. A "good" American is someone who works hard to make the most of this country.

every American who stands behind their country... and votes to over turn decisions made by the government they feel are unjust. a Good American also helps their own people by lending a hand when needed. It is our job to help our on in times of need and I think America has gotten away from that.

A good American is someone who someone is patriotic but not afraid to disagree with the US when he/she believes that its wrong. Contrary to the GOP, disagreeing with our policies in the Middle East doesn't make you unpatriotic. What's unpatriotic is trying to shut up and shut down anyone who disagrees with the direction the country is going. I love my wife but I don't agree with every decision she makes. I love my country and I don't agree with its leadership at every turn. But I still think that I'm a "good" husband as well as a "good" American.

the same ideal for baden powell and the british: What is a good boy scout? it is the same with joseph conrad's anglophile love, that wish to see and assume the best in all of us in our fellow men. the only difference between us and the british is that a great deal of us would love to still have more capitalism in our diet. and some of us here, as i assume some of you there, are prepared for nuclear fall-out. it is an important thing to have in mind: that preparedness.
