I relate it to "cuss/curse" = "under a curse" or "damned." And where do the damned go?

Then there is shock value in certain words, and they are said just for the disapproval of others. In a puritanical society, such as the very early days in what is now the United States, what is the worst thing imaginable? Hell, of course, and the rebels would say the word just to go against the grain. Another theory is that since the commandment said not to use the name of the Lord in vain, and later Jesus said not to swear by anything in Heaven or on Earth, Hell covered it.

I've often wondered about certain other words, such as the cusswords that start with S and F. They have no bearing on anything religious and they don't put people down like racist or sexist words do. They are just random letters and syllables. What's the big deal? Why are they so bad?

EDIT: LOL, bunni. Personally, I would nominate you for the points.

Hell is a cuss word? I didn't know. I believe some zealots say that if you tell somebody to go to hell that is wrong because only the gods are allowed to judge men and that is usurping the power of the gods. But Hell itself is not a cuss word to my knowledge.

Only prudes and religious fanatics.

Stick to the words they use on network TV at 8PM and you should be fine.
