the product of the extremes is 16 x 25=400

we have to spilt the middle term 40 in sucha a way that when multiplied the twoparts should produce an answer of the product of extremes (i.e) 400.

now 40=20+20 as wells as 20 x 20=400

so spliting itwe can write this as

16x^2+20xy+20xy+25y^2
taking commn terms ans simplifying we get
4x(4x+5y)+5y(4x+5y)
=(4x+5y)^2

16x^2+40xy+25y^2 is given expression,
This can also be written as
(4x)^2+2*4x*5y+(5y)^2
This is in the form of a^2+2ab+b^2=(a+b)^2
Here,a=4x,b=5y.
.:16x^2+40xy+25y^2=(4x+5y)^2
=(4x+5y)*(4x+5y)
