I'm not sure they're really trying to say anything, but I bet they enjoy the sound of their new voices. This is why babies often squeal, because they can! LOL They say that at around 3 months babies have already isolated the sounds they will hear in their native language, and all other sounds that they don't hear get 'weeded out,' so to speak.

Babies are so cute- I envy you! My youngest is now almost 4 and I miss when she was a baby. Anyway, babies are just learning how to use their vocal chords. I don't think they are really communicating anything. Just experimenting with the different sounds they can make with their vocal chords. It's new and exciting to them when they discover something new on their body.

An Australian woman cracked the "language" (the language being universal sound reflexes regardless of your language). Some have criticised the discovery (yes, criticise with an s, just like vocalise :-) ), not so much the language itself, but rather the lack of scientific studies. I can say from personal experience that it works with my daughter:
"Neh"=Hunger
"Eh"=Needs burping
"Eairh"=Lower gas pain
"Heh"=Discomfort (too hot/cold, clothes too tight, etc.)
"Owh"=Tired

I'm sure you can discern happy from sad noises already. He's just now figuring out that when he moves his mouth a certain way, a noise comes out, and he's in control of it. Practice makes perfect.
