I think if you feel you need to give something in return for the favour of fixing your car, i would make sure it was given in the correct context etc, a nice card, with thanks and some of your very own words, and perhaps a gift voucher , from a dept store where he can chose something he may need, departments stores have personal and non personal things.
Otherwise a lottery ticket, in a personal card would be suitable.
Or purchase a coffee or beer mug and have "to the mechanic" engraved and the year.( date)
He will always have something to remember his good deed, of giving to others and how thankful you were.

This has happened to me, not once but a few times, and it just goes to show you that there are really really good people out there.. I had very little money during those times and I am so glad someone helped with my car, I sent them a pizza with a thank you note, on the box. Yes they probably would have liked the beer, I don't know, They might of even liked homemade cookies or cake, But what you do for them/him I am sure they will be happy, good luck with whatever you do.

Apart from the obvious, I remember helping out a neighbour with a car problem (just a neighbourly thing to do) and I was surprised & rather touched when she came round with a Thank You card & a bunch of flowers for she who must be obeyed.
