When did it become illegal to kill a man in the United States? I read (on a random fact website) that it was not a felony to assassinate a president until after Kennedy was killed. Whether it is true or not, I would like to know when exactly murder became illegal. Please cite sources.

Murdering Anybody has been illegal since Day 1 of the history of the USA. It was illegal during colonial times. It was illegal back in merry old England, and so on and so on...

If Congress saw fit to "Federalize" the murder of the President only After Kennedy was shot, that, by no means should suggest that killing FDR would have been allowed.

(Remember-- when Lincoln was shot, there was a massive manhunt to track down John Wilkes Booth, who only evaded trial by getting killed himself.)

Federalizing the crime just means that a US attorney prosecutes the crime in a Federal court instead of a state's DA in a state court.
