It depends if you are in a retreat state. If someone comes into your bedroom, you can definitely hurt them. I would say, if someone is in your house without your knowledge or permission, they probably mean you harm.
Contact a legal professional in your area to make sure you know your rights and responsibilities when it comes to defending your home.

Well Police Officers can use whatever force that is necessary to effect an arrest. This means that they can use non-lethal control techniques to include take down moves hand to hand that is also using weapons eg; OC spray (mace), baton, taser, some use nun-chukus. A police officer can only use deadly force if he feels that himself and/or another civilian are in imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury eg; someone swinging an ax, knife, bat, brick, pretty much anything heavy that can cause serious bodily injury. (Remember Goliath was killed with a rock from a sling)
Having said that if someone enters your home and they are carrying a weapon (except a gun)and you yourself are armed with a weapon be it a bat, tire iron, or even a gun. Turn on the lights at least let him know that you know he's there, at that point fight or flight will kick in. The choice is his weather he wants to fight or run away. You as a civilian do not have the right to use force on him unless he attempts to assault you meaning cause you harm thru threat or actual use of force to cause you serious bodily injury. Now you may use the defense of citizens arrest, but you better be sure of your local laws before you go using weapons on people. The assailant could turn around and sue YOU. If you should find your self in this situation and are forced to make such a decision you will only have seconds to make the decision but they (the jury and judge) will have months to decide if you made the right decision.

It will depend on the laws in the location where you are located as to whether or not they can sue you if you inflict bodily harm, and sad to say but true, even if they are in the commission of an illegal act.
Pretty much everywhere, once they leave your front door and you are out of imminent danger, if you inflict bodily harm, you can be prosecuted. Again, doesn't seem right, but has happened in many a case.

Well each state has different laws. I live in Tennessee, and if someone breaks into your house and you fear for your life and the life of others then you have a right to defend yourself. But if I was you, you may want to check the laws in your state.
