FrontPage Magazine: You make the shrewd observation of how political correctness engenders evil because of “the violence that it does to people’s souls by forcing them to say or imply what they do not believe, but must not question.” Can you talk about this a bit?

Theodore Dalrymple: Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.

Right on the money my brother. Political correctness is in its essence, emasculation of free thinking.
There is no balance in political correctness because if your belief is contrary to the prevailing whims, you are silenced!
A world of political correctness and respect for others whacked out opinions sure goes out the window when you espouse conservative views... All of the sudden, you are labelled as a hater, etc.
You look at the real surveys of media and college professors and you find free speech is stifled in most of these "insitututions" which is where a lot of these whackos belong.
Thus endeth the sermon

Dalrymple could be speaking of virtually any orthodox idealogy. The loss of self and believing of lies is a common criticism of organized religion and political ideologies. Each individual decides however how far their belief goes.
Political correctness does attempt to blend people into a kind of boring, bland mixture. It is true that assenting to obvious lies is evil. It is like making a pact with the devil, so to speak. The key word here is obvious. Blind faith is not an especially good idea, except as a name for a band. Ultimately, one who places complete trust in humans accepts that humans are not perfect and not totally trust worthy. The analogy does not carry really well over into the realm of political correstness.

Sounds like the view from North Korea... follow blindly as the empty stomach dictates the outcome of the desired truth. But the truth itself is within the people who is with the events that is force to adhere it and true to itself even if it is a lie or not... and that truth is the truth not whatever you think is the truth.
