There are a total of seven continents; they are Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Australasia and Antarctica.

The largest continent in terms of area is Asia; it has an area of approximately forty three million square kilometres. Asia is also the most populous continent with two of the most populous countries of China and India located in it. Europe along with North America is perhaps where the most developed countries lie. Collectively they are sometimes known as the western world. Africa which is the second largest in terms of area is perhaps the poorest continent in terms of standard of living. Australasia contains the countries of Australia, New Zealand and the surrounding Islands; it is also at times referred to as Oceania. Antarctica is the only continent which is uninhabited due to its extremely severe cold weather.
