Plus minus 21-22 months. The baby will then stay with its mother until it is 13 years old and then it will be adult enough to fend for itsself, but will stay in the mother's group for life. Elephants have eyesight like humans which means it is not too good in the dark, so the babies are normally ALWAYS born at night so that the eyes could adjust quicker to get to the milk. When born in the day the strong light hurts its eyes and cannot find the teet too quickly. All the females in a group will also look after the baby - not feed it - just look out for it.

elephant pregnancy is 22 months aproximately but can be up to 24! one baby elephant is usual though twins are known even though its rare. glad i'm not an elephant - 9 months is plenty!
