Because the Neo-Libs hijacked the election. They sabotaged the war effort and hoped for inflated troop deaths so they could pin the blame on Bush and again gain dominance.
Their ploy will eventually fail. The American people are not stupid. The people will see through their machinations.

The biggest reason is Republicans are Socialists and not conservatives. They increased the size of the govt by 50% in the last ten years and discouraged any conservative. They are dishonest to increase govt size and reduce taxes. Now we face serious economic problems when tax receipts slow from their 10% annual increase last two years. Had they reduced spending and govt they might have garnered wide support regardless of the war. Now we must hope the Democrats raise taxes to 50% (80% for high incomes) in order to have a pay as you go to afford the Monster Socialist govt created by Republicans
