know whether or not you need a permit to build a fence around your property?

It depends on the county. You need to check with your county.
Montgomery county does require permits, and requires a set back from the property line for fences. Carroll county doesn't require either. I'm not sure about the other counties.

If you DIY, you will need to take care of this. If you are going through a company (i.e. Long Fence, etc.), they should take care of it for you. But you as the owner are ultimately responsible for knowing the requirement and making sure that it has been fulfilled.

Hi, I'm a general contractor. Most states don't control local building permits, so to answer your question, you need to call your local government. Most times unincorporated areas in counties have different requirements, than the cities or towns, and most towns and cities are different , too. Some base permit requirements on the type of work, some on total cost, some have restrictions on what is even allowed, most are a mixture of all the above, so the only way to tell is to contact either the county or town/city where you own the home for requirements. Good luck in your project.
