Although it is doubtful it can be eradicated, a way to help is to change our national priorities by things like not cutting 50 billion from programs like vets programs,, food stamps, wic, school lunch, education, housing, child support enforcement (divorce plunges many women and their kids into poverty). etc as republicans did in dec 2005, while turning around 3 weeks later and giving the wealthy 70 billion in tax cuts (in a time of war no less and no sacrifice from rich while poor give their kids to injury, death, and trama in war).

If one is making over 150,000 a year, they should receive no tax cuts which will save us a great deal of money.

Also change the balance of power amoung the workers and people and corporations. increase unions, break up media monopolies for more diversity and less effective propaganda, fund public education and media, break up media monopolies and encourage a freemarket system instead as monopolies force out diversity and competition, have an arms length relationship between congress and politicians and corporations, and stopping corporate personhood will be a major step., etc.

Cut 20% from the military and war budget and instead fund health care, free school from pre-k through college as education is the only proven way at of poverty. We spend 47% of our entire budget on past, present wars and the military. (Kucinich idea)

About $4000 per taxpayer goes to corporate welfare a huge part of the budget far surpassing ALL social programs combined. Put caps on the amunt of money CEO's can make. They should not be making 3000 xs the average worker. If a company is showing mega millions in profits, pass laws workers cannot be laid off without good compensation.

Reduce the stigma of needing government assistance through programs for those needing help and create job programs to give those capable of working good paying jobs that have at least a living (as opposed to minimum) wage.

Stop outsourcing jobs and giving tax breaks to corporations that have no loyalty to our country and stop NAFTA and the WTO. By cutting the defense budget by 20%, we could not only help our country but give every person on the planet clean, safe water and other aid.

Many of these ideas are supported by presidential Dennis Kucinich who is currently running for president.

Two ideas I have seen that gives hope to this. One works from the lower levels up, the other from the top down.

I helped with a farm project in southern Brazil, called "New Hope Farm" **. The idea was to set up an example of various farming methods that can be achieved in whatever area is available to you (eg- worm farm or beehives in the area the size of a backyard, to cattle and orchards in several hundred acres).
The idea was to invite people to learn how to be self-sufficient as a family.
A job is good, but the income depends on someone else. A small business you own can suppliment a hobby income.

On an international level, freeing up the movement of goods, services and resources can help get the economy flowing to those areas where transport is available.
Middle USA was stagnant during the pre-WW II era until a highway system was built crossing the country East - West and North - South.
Likewise, an International rail / highway system that top levels have been talking about (see link) can free up poorer areas of the world and allow them access to other markets.
The biggest visionary part of this is making a tunnel (similar to the England - France tunnel) through the islands in the Bering Straight connecting America (Alaska) with Asia (Serbia).
The biggest barrier to make that is not the technology, but the political co-opperation and overcoming prejudices.

** I am not sure how the Brazil project developed. I was there in 1995-6

Probably. But it's a loooong way off, in my opinion - too far away for us to even contemplate of it being genuinely possible. Anyway, let's just consider "reduction" of poverty - now, I think /that/ is possible (and if we keep doing it, who knows, we may eventually eradicate it).

There are a lot of problems that will have to be solved in the mean time. Most of which have to do with addressing societal problems:

Proper education (not just plain literacy) for *each* individual is needed for democracy and capitalism to work (which in turn can probably be the engine towards the world you want) -- education on values (honestly, responsibility, fairness, equality, etc.) and understanding each one's role in society are critical;

And just as important, under- and over-population should be addressed (which, I have to say is more difficult than it seems, especially with all the religious and cultural attention it attracts);

These I think are the two key areas that will help promote the reduction of poverty.

The key is economic growth. At least in the United States, the average "poor' person lives in a trailer park, drives an 18 yr old pickup truck, and bitches because they can't afford cable television.

For the most part, most Western nations who have become rich can afford to eradicate poverty in their own country.

As a former president of Peru pointed out, "You can't redistribute "wealth" if your country doesn't have any"

Anti-Poverty Recipe

1) Remove all tyrants, dictators, theocratic, communist and socialist governments
2) Install people power democracys with strong anti-corruption laws with enforcement
3) Provide agricultural assistance to such needy countries to develop their own food source with sufficient training to continue and improve process and quality (nutrition)
4) Provide desalinization facilities for countries with no access to fresh water
5) Out-law foreign ownership of resources such as diamonds, oil and metals or maintain national ownership at above 50%
6) Provide food, seeds, fish, fresh water until self-sufficient
7) Provide educational assistance through schools and libraries, after feeding (who can learn while starving)
8) Enable and support free-market economies
9) Help build infrastructure for functional economies

Under "Provide": Provide by those countries who are in the "haves" category.

Sure it can be eliminated, you just have to make all people the same, but can you imagine how boring that would be? In reality the answer is NO!!! People have free will. Even if we are all born equal, that's where equality stops, we all develop different abilities and skills. The best you can hope for is that people establish governments where people are free do exercise their free will and not be oppressed. Keep in mind that free will must have limits also. Free will cannot be exercised to the point that it will infringe on the free will of other people.

Absolutely Not. There are people everywhere with opportunity to prosper that just don't bother to get up in the morning and go to work.

People who are willing to work manage to succeed in unbelievable circumstances. Like a slave before the civil war managed to work at night for towns people near the plantation at night. Who was able to buy his freedom and start his own business. People also fail with opportunity all around them.

It is an age-old question. Unfortunately, most governments are helpless in dealing with this problem. I think corruption in society should be eradicated. This is the first step towards progress.
