Everytime I vist there most people are wanting a free hand out or something like that. I have even seen a friend of mine who forced his Mom to give him cash for beer and other trivial stuff all the time, he like treats her like trash. Don't you people have any respect for your parents or elders?

There are 2 main reason's for that:
1. Americans have no culture, there are no guidelines for how to treat each other.
2. It is purely capitalist and money is the only thing that matters there.
But basically the US is just a really miserable place, there are really very few good things about it. You can disagree all you like, deep down you all know it's true. That's why the percentage of depressed people in the US is so high.

This holds true for every living entity that has taking birth in this "material" world: we are all materialists. If we weren't, we certainly wouldn't be here. Some to a higher or lesser degree than others, but no one is the exception. Since in this part of the world there is more wealth and a higher standard of living, naturally one becomes more materialistic and less kind. However not everyone is like that, it seems to me that you lucked out and dealt with someone who is rather unkind.

It depends on how you were raised up! I have great respect for my parents/in laws. I have a savings account set aside in case one of them becomes seriously ill, so I can take care of them.
(no nursing homes!)

As for being materialistic, I have an easy cure for that! I turn off the T.V. My kids are encouraged to read, draw, and generally entertain themselves instead. We watch T.V. as a family.

We follow a simple rule: Use it up, wear it out, or make do. That way we don't contribute as much "junk" that ends up in a landfill anyway.

I will admit that a lot of Americans are very materialistic though.

It is more of a trend that has evolved over the decades. For one, the American society advertises iPods, mp3 players, and all these other expensive things.

Nobody wants to look poor. If everyone else has something, then you want it too

It's not just America. Unfortunately it's just how the world is sometimes. There is good and bad in every country. Everyone is different. Just accept it.

Ouch! Please don't lump us all into one category. We're not all like that, I promise.

America is truly a very materialistic society. It's a shame. We have gotten away from what is most important in this life; God, family and people. All of that has been replaced with money, food, sex and excess.

Pray for us please. We need it.

Of course we do. It depends on who you're dealing with. I was raised to respect my parents and elders.
