Did anybody see Yzermans retirement? He was thanking Anaheim for coming and he almost called them the Mighty Ducks! It was pretty funny..
" I just wanted to thank the Anaheim M...... Ducks for being here tonight as well.. "
funny
But yes, the other answers are correct. named after the emelio estevez movie called the Mighty Ducks. Disney sold the team and the mighty was dropped cause it was stupid. Should have changed the whole name in my opinion!

First the Ducks this season are pretty mighty. But mighty was dropped from their name when Disney sold the team; they made a movie about the Might Ducks but since they sold the team they decided to drop the name.

The new owners, Henry and Susan Samueli, bought the team in 2005, and after last season changed the name of the team, removing "Mighty" from the name, and renaming the team the Anaheim Ducks. They also came up with a new color scheme, logo, and uniform for the team switching from eggplant and jade to black, gold, and orange.

They took it off to finish severing ties with Disney, which orginally owned the team. Disney sold the team a few years ago and the new owners asked the season ticket holders and players if they should stay the ducks or get a whole new name. Obviously Keep the Ducks name won.

because they changed the name!
it's wrong though, specially this year, they're quite mighty so they should still have been called "mighty ducks of anaheim". then again, it could have been this change of name that brought a stroke of luck to the ducks. who knows.
maybe they didn't like the old name anymore, like the logo. personally i think it's a mistake, the old name and logo were much nicer!

Disney sold the team and the new owners decided to start a completely new image. They got rid of the "Mighty" because they felt it was unprofessional. They also changed the logo, and the uniforms. Not only that, but Arrowhead's contract ran out, and a new one was purchased by Honda. So "The Arrowhead Pond" is now called "Honda Center". Really the only thing that was kept was their mascot "Wild Wing", because the fans didn't want to see him go.

haha, i think that the name was BETTER with Mighty, cuz at least they had an EXCUSE to be called the Mighty Ducks. "oh, it's cuz of the movie, and we're owned by Disney". ...Now what's their excuse for being called the Ducks? EVERYONE LOOK OUT!! THE DUCKS ARE COMING!!!

Disney sold the team so they don't have to use the name from the Disney movie anymore, and since it was a stupid name (ok for kids on a fictional team, not so much for the best league in the world), they dropped the 'Mighty.'
